Eddy Pleased With Progress on Impeachment Proceedings
Springfield….The Illinois House of Representatives passed HR 1650 Monday, creating a committee that will investigate cause to impeach Governor Rod Blagojevich. State Representative Roger Eddy (R – Hutsonville) was a co-sponsor of the resolution that establishes a committee of 21 House members, made up of 12 Democrats and 9 Republicans, that will meet to investigate grounds for impeaching the Governor.
“Today’s action on HR 1650 is encouraging. The people of Illinois expect and deserve our full attention to the somber matter we face,” Eddy said. House Speaker Michael Madigan announced early Monday that he would move forward with beginning impeachment proceedings. The committee created by HR 1650 will establish the standards for impeachment and will meet every day except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day
“The committee will hear testimony and will have subpoena power to require witnesses to testify,” Eddy said. Individuals that wish to testify before the committee will be asked to present an offer of proof to the committee on what they will be testifying about.
“I do have some concerns regarding the balance of power on the Committee of 21,” Eddy said. “I don’t understand the need to play political games with this committee, but I’m not surprised. Business as usual may continue in this state as long as there is one party rule, and that is a shame,” Eddy said.
HR 1650 passed the Illinois House of Representatives 113 – 0.
